What a trivia software subscription actually includes

The phrase "trivia software" covers everything from a spreadsheet to a full show platform. Here is what ours is.

A Game Show Business subscription is two things in one package: a Windows desktop program that runs the show, and the content that fills it. Neither is much use alone, which is why they are not sold separately.

The content

A new game posts at 12:01 a.m. every Monday through Thursday. Each one is written and fact-checked against documented sources, then packaged with its images, audio and music clips. You download it with one click. Four games a week, every week.

The software

The program drives two screens: the host dashboard on your laptop and the audience display on the venue TV or projector. It plays question music while teams write, keeps score as you enter answers, shows the standings between rounds and runs the final reveal. Preview mode lets you read the whole game in the afternoon. If the laptop restarts mid-show, the game recovers where it stopped. Once the game is downloaded, the show runs with no internet connection.

What you still supply

The venue, the host, the laptop, a speaker and microphone, answer sheets, and the prizes, which are usually gift cards to the venue itself. The subscription does not find your venue or stand on the microphone. It makes sure that when you do, the show is finished and the scoring is right.

What it costs

Each program is $199 a month for one licensed laptop and one host, up to four games a week. That is under $12.50 a game at full use. There is no long-term contract, and the first 30 days are free with no credit card, starting after a setup call and training session.

The three programs differ in how the game plays, from the multiple-choice-with-wagers Mind Games Trivia to single-answer Quizzly to the no-risk Smarty Pants Trivia. The comparison page lays them side by side.

A subscription is not a stack of questions. It is the show, minus the host.
